Have you ever heard of the “hair of the dog” method for overcoming hangovers? It’s the method of drinking more alcohol to overcome the symptoms of a hangover, but does it really work?
This method is meant to “cure” symptoms including a headache, dehydration, fatigue and upset stomach. In fact according to 11 per cent of social drinkers, this method works.
There are a few theories as to why this method works.
- When your blood alcohol level returns to zero, the symptoms get worse. Drinking raises your blood alcohol level again and you no longer experience hangover symptoms. Some believe this merely postpones the hangover symptoms.
- It is believed that drinking alcohol raises endorphins which can mask the hangover symptoms and leads to pleasurable feelings.
