Heavy Drinkers Consume More Than Half of All Alcohol

Alarming new research has emerged that suggests that heavy drinkers are consuming more than half of all alcohol in Australia.

Just 10 per cent of drinkers are consuming 54.4 per cent of all the alcohol consumed in Australia, according to research out of Victoria’s La Trobe University.

The heaviest of Australia’s drinkers are more likely to consume cheap alcohol including beer and cask wine, according to the study.

Researchers also found these drinkers are usually middle-aged men living in rural and regional Australia and they are more likely to drink at home rather than go out and drink.

These drinkers are consuming well above drinking guidelines and consume an average of 6 standard drinks per day.
