Addressing Mental Health in Hospitality

The Australian charity R U OK? has launched a tool for the hospitality industry – an online course for people that may be struggling with mental health problems.

The initiative was funded with the assistance of Comcater and Mal Meiers’ Food for Thought program and developed by R U OK? and hospitality training provider Allara Learning to develop the course.

The course is an interactive one aimed at helping people notice the signs of someone who is struggling and how to find the right time and place to ask them the question R U Ok? It is also aimed at helping them with the conversation that may follow if the person says they are not.

To coincide with the program’s launch, a survey with hospitality professionals was also released which showed that 80% of hospitality workers agreed that mental health issues, including depressed feelings, anxiety and manic feelings are just some of the challenges faced by the industry.

The survey found that fatigue was the number one challenge in the workplace.

For younger workers the main stressors included unsociable work hours, pay challenges and dealing with difficult customers as the main workplace stress points.
